Free Portfolio Accounting Software

Investing can be really interesting, but accounting for your transactions can be a real pain. Having a piece of software to do all that for us can be very convenient. However, as retail investors, we also do not want to spend extra money on such things when earning cash is already challenging. I spent quite a large amount of time researching on best free ways to solve this issue. Here are the results.

1. Google Spreadsheet (Click to download)

A handy Google spreadsheet (like Excel) created by Investment Moats.

The good

     - Real time market prices
     - Portfolio net worth shown
     - Dividend tracking
     - Split shares / Right Issues tracking
     - Web-based

The not-so-good

     - No plotting of portfolio performance over time

2. JStock (Click to download)

An open source PC based investment accounting software.

The good

     - Everything the google spreadsheet can do, plus:
     - Plotting of portfolio performance over time (in chart form)
     - Yahoo data and charts integration (and a lot faster than Yahoo site)
     - Quick access to 10 year (or more) charts
     - Technical Stock screener (sorry, no fundamentals)
     - Data back-up on Google Drive (only back up, not viewable)

The not-so-good

     - Not web-based (you need JStock installed)
